Is Netflix's Daybreak That Bad (or are we too old)?

This week Shannon and Fadra are catching up on everything they’ve been watching and sharing with you what they love and hate. You’ll get some new ideas for what to watch – and what to skip, including a review of Netflix’s Daybreak.

6:10 – Here’s what we’re watching on TV/streaming:

  •  Atypical S3 (Netflix): Must-see!
  • The End of the F***ing World S2 (Netflix): Pretty good. You’ll like it if you liked S1.
  • Modern Love (Amazon): Really sweet! Some episodes are better than others (anthology series).
  • The Righteous Gemstones (HBO): Intriguing, funny, and promising.
  • Explained (Netflix): Mini-documentaries; digestible and good to watch.
  • Castle Rock (Hulu): We both love it! (Check out our Castle Rock preview podcast!)

32:40 Movies:

  • The Grand Budapest Hotel: Weirdly delightful.
  • Vox Lux: HATED it.
  • Yesterday: Absolutely loved this movie!
  • The Greatest Showman: It’s a nice movie.
  • Peel: Quirky but fun!

40:39 When we attended New York Comic Con, we were intrigued by Netflix’s new teen apocalypse dramedy, Daybreak. Fadra attended a roundtable interview and spoke with members of the cast including Matthew Broderick (Principal Burr), Krysta Rodriguez (Ms. Crumble), Austin Crute (Wesley Fists), Alyvia Alyn Lind (Angelica Green), Colin Ford (Josh Wheeler), and Sophie Simnett (Sam Dean). We’ve got some of those clips for you on the podcast today.

But now that the show is out and we’ve watched, we can safely say: Skip it.

Fadra watched the whole season, but Shannon only got through 4 episodes before giving up. We explore our feelings about this show:

  • The acting is forced.
  • The political agenda is blatant and horrible.
  • It was overly raunchy for no apparent reason.
  • We didn’t like or relate to any character.
  • This show has no idea who its audience is.
  • Is this what teens are really like these days?

And finally, we discuss if maybe we are just too old to identify with Daybreak. Judging by the reviews, the answer is no.
